Tips for PDF passwords

  • A few random words make a strong password that's easy to remember.
  • Share the password separately from the file — for example by phone or message.
  • Forgot it? Nobody can recover it, so keep a copy somewhere safe.

Questions

How do I put a password on a PDF?

Choose the PDF, type a password twice and tap Lock PDF. The downloaded PDF asks for that password before it opens, in any PDF reader.

How strong is the protection?

It uses AES-256, the strongest encryption PDF readers support. A long password (a few random words) makes it practically impossible to open without the password.

What does "Also block copying and editing" do?

People who open the PDF with the password can read and print it, but PDF readers won't let them copy text or change it.

I forgot the password. Can you recover it?

No. The password is never sent to us or stored anywhere, so nobody can recover it. Keep a copy somewhere safe.

Is my PDF or password uploaded?

No. The PDF is locked in your browser; neither the file nor the password leaves your device.
